I managed to eventually hear a distant Hooded Warbler today after a lot of searching and listening. I started my morning at Quabbin Park and was having a very productive morning as I waited for the gates to open. After seeing that the nights migration had brought in a lot of birds I was anxious to see what showed up and I also hoped to relocate the Lawrence's Warbler I found yesterday. My plans changed when I got a text from Jack saying he had a Hooded Warbler at Skinner SP. I immediately made it back to the car and headed over and made the hike up. I went to the area he reported the bird in but no sign of the Hooded Warbler. I walked around a bit in the area and eventually caught up with Jack. It seemed the Hooded Warbler was moving upslope a bit and further down the ridge so I headed up as he went down. The upper part of the mountain was alive with warblers and I missed a text from Jack saying he had it once again. Once I saw the text I was right back down the mountain and by the time I arrived the bird was silent again. I then spent hours trying to relocate it and eventually I had it singing distantly downslope and I went down and never heard it again. I spent over three hours at Skinner SP and although I had 19 species of warbler overall I never got a look at the Hooded Warbler. I will check back again tomorrow and perhaps the next day as I try a warbler big day (maybe). Once I was done at Skinner SP I headed back over to Quabbin Park and had more warblers but no sign of the Lawrence's Warbler (I managed an amazing 38 ticks on my pants and shoes as I went off trail perhaps 300 feet...crazy. For the entire day I found 26 species of warbler. Even without a look (or photo) of the Hooded Warbler it was nice to have one back in the county as I missed having one last year.
