Yellow rumped Warbler 'myrtle', Blue Meadow Rd, Quabbin, Belchertown, MA, |
I had a surprise sighting this morning while participating in the Quabbin Christmas Bird Count when I heard and then briefly saw a Yellow rumped Warbler while walking along Blue Meadow Road at Quabbin (the area is restricted access and only accessible with a permit). The bird was initially heard in flight and then seen as it settled into the top of a tree just long enough for brief looks and a quick photo before it continued further west. Yellow rumped Warbler is a rare winter sighting in Hampshire County, especially away from the area of the Connecticut River. In looking at winter records (December-February) in eBird there are just a few records for the eastern part of Hampshire County with two previous early December records (one of which I had earlier this month in Ware) and a single record in early February at Quabbin Park (when an experienced observer was checking out the long staying Varied Thrush at Quabbin Tower). This is only the third time a Yellow rumped Warbler has been seen on the Quabbin CBC.
