Yesterday was mainly a rain out with very few warblers around as low pressure moved up along a cold front and kept the day very wet.  Today was much nicer with a mix of sun and clouds and a steadily increasing wind out of the northwest.  I was out early before the winds kicked up too badly and had a some stuff at my first couple stops but it was fairly lacking overall in the warbler department.  All that changed with my next stop when I ran across a large mixed flock in a very small area that contained 14 species of warblers (including several Cape May Warblers and Tennessee Warblers)...always fun to try to sort through them all as they rapidly move around feeding.  The next few nights look to feature some good migration conditions and I suspect the next few morning could produce some good numbers and diversity.  The trick is finding the right edge habitat as the sun warms up the cold morning and the birds and bugs get active.

Common Yellowthroat, Arcadia, Northampton, MA, Sep 17, 2023

After I got out of work on Sunday morning I headed over to Arcadia which turned out to be very slow with just half a dozen species of warblers...very quiet for mid September.  I added a couple more species in the East Meadows but most areas there were quiet too, especially as the morning warmed up.

September is now half way done and the peak of fall warbler migration is upon us with increasing chances for Connecticut Warblers (I had my first one on Sep. 11th) and many species become increasingly less common with each passing day.  The next several nights hold the promise of some good to great migration conditions and each morning out holds the promise of finding new arrivals, perhaps even something unusual.  I have so far had 27 species for the month, which is all the expected species as well as a few lingering ones.  Very soon the predominant warblers will be Yellow rumped Warblers and Palm Warblers.

I had my first Connecticut Warbler of the fall this morning in the East Meadows while trying in vain to track down a Stilt Sandpiper that I missed by just a few minutes.  The morning featured intermittent rain showers and conditions like this can produce some good shorebirds (and other stuff) forced down by the weather.  After a brief stop at Winsor Dam I headed over to Hadley and was at the Honey Pot looking at shorebirds when I got a text from Ted about a Stilt Sandpiper and headed across the river only to arrive a couple minutes too late.  I then bounced around the area and finally settled on spending a decent amount of time in the East Meadows.  Ted had mentioned he had a Connecticut Warbler in a large cornfield so I had that species in the back of my mind as I walked the various mud filled roads in the meadows.  After my third pass by the cornfield I heard the distinct chip of a Connecticut Warbler and it sounded close.  I got some recordings and then waited and looked for movement.  I came up with a couple Song Sparrows in the area and then eventually the warbler.  It actually showed as well as I have had the species in a few years and I snapped off loads of photos as the bird perched up within the corn perhaps ten feet from me.  Always a great experience to get some up close looks and photos of this typically cryptic species.  Although not the expected spot to find these warblers I have had a few in cornfields in the past and is yet another spot to try when looking for them in fall around here.  The species is just starting to arrive in the area and the prime time is coming up from the mid part of September until the end of the month so worth getting out and looking and listening.  Hopefully I will turn up several more before they make there long flight down to Amazon basin.

In addition to the Connecticut Warbler I had a couple Yellow Warblers as well as several Common Yellowthroats.  Not a ton of diversity for sure but some really good stuff nonetheless.  A walk with Wilson in the drizzly late morning added an Ovenbird and a couple Pine Warblers to the haul for the day.

A high feeding Mourning Warbler among a dozen species of warbler today

Mourning Warbler, Great Pond, Hatfield, MA, Sep 9, 2023
Mourning Warbler, Great Pond, Hatfield, MA, Sep 9, 2023

I headed out this morning on another warm and humid morning and decided last minute to go across the river to Great Pond and I was glad I did.  The most unusual warbler for the morning was a Mourning Warbler that was at least 40' up in a tree feeding...very unusual behavior for a species that usually is in dense thickets and rarely makes it above a few feet off the ground.  The eye ring could easily fool someone into thinking Connecticut Warbler but it was indeed a Mourning Warbler.

American Redstart, Hadley, MA, Sep 9, 2023
Black and White Warbler, Hadley, MA, Sep 9, 2023
Prairie Warbler, Great Pond, Hatfield, MA, Sep 9, 2023
Yellow Warbler, Great Pond, Hatfield, MA, Sep 9, 2023
American Redstart, Great Pond, Hatfield, MA, Sep 9, 2023
Northern Parula, Great Pond, Hatfield, MA, Sep 9, 2023

Palm Warbler 'western', Great Pond, Hatfield, MA, Sep 9, 2023
Palm Warblers 'western', Great Pond, Hatfield, MA, Sep 9, 2023

Besides the above mentioned Mourning Warbler my stop at Great Pond featured a total of nine species of warbler including my first Palm Warblers of the fall (with a total of seven).  Some of the warblers showed well down low while others stayed near the tops of the mature trees that line the pond.  I also made a stop along the river in Hadley and added more warblers.  As I was walking out I got a text from Mary that she had a Connecticut Warbler in the East Meadows so I eventually headed over to the location but had no luck.  By the time I got there the sun was poking out and it was warming up quickly and the time was past ten.  I very seldom get Connecticut Warblers past ten in the morning.  Hopefully I will run across a few Connecticut Warblers over the next couple weeks as their migration peaks in the area.  I ended the morning with a dozen species of warblers.

The first week of September

Nashville Warbler, UMASS, Amherst, MA, Sep 4, 2023
Common Yellowthroat, UMASS, Amherst, MA, Sep 4, 2023
American Redstart, UMASS, Amherst, MA, Sep 4, 2023
Blackpoll Warbler, Quabbin Park, MA, Sep 5, 2023
Black and White Warbler and Bay breasted Warbler, Quabbin Park, MA, Sep 5, 2023
Black and White Warbler, Quabbin Park, MA, Sep 5, 2023
Black throated Green Warbler, Quabbin Park, MA, Sep 5, 2023

After getting a bunch of warblers during the first three days of September I added several more by the end of the first week including some slightly unusual/late species including my latest ever Louisiana Waterthrush along the Jabish Canal on the 5th and a Mourning Warbler this morning.  I now have 24 species for the month and I'm still missing at least three species I'm likely to get before the month ends (Palm Warbler, Connecticut Warbler and Wilson's Warbler).  Overall it has been a bit slow despite getting a fairly high species total with many very quiet spots and very few larger mixed flocks.  I will certainly be out there looking as much as I possibly can.  The end of the first week finished very hot as we had our first official heat wave of the year (better late than never I suppose).  I expect a good influx coming in during the beginning of next week.

Warblers for the beginning of September

Prairie Warbler, Quabbin Park, MA, Sep 3, 2023
Cape May Warbler, Quabbin Park, MA, Sep 3, 2023
Ovenbird, UMASS Demonstration Forest, Belchertown, MA, Sep 3, 2023
Chestnut sided Warbler, Quabbin Park, MA, Sep 2, 2023
Northern Parula, Quabbin Park, MA, Sep 2, 2023
Bay breasted Warbler, Quabbin Park, MA, Sep 2, 2023
Magnolia Warbler, Silvio Conte NWR-Fort River, Hadley, MA, Sep 1, 2023

The first three days of September I have been able to get out at least a little bit in the morning and I have so far found a total of 19 species of warblers.  The migration conditions the last few nights have not been great and at times it is tough to find pockets of birds.  There are certainly migrants moving through (Cape May Warblers continue in good early numbers) but no big flocks anywhere I have been.  With a potential heat wave on the way I suspect the next big push will come toward the end of the upcoming week when conditions get better for migration.

August ends

Black throated Green Warbler, Quabbin Park, MA, Aug 27, 2023
Chestnut sided Warbler, Quabbin Park, MA, Aug 27, 2023

A solid month for warblers for me has now about come to a close with a total of 24 species for Hampshire County for August.  Now comes September, the big month of fall warbler migration as the breeding species from the local area and points to the north come moving through on their way to warmer climes.  The mid to later part of the month with bring the potential for some Connecticut Warblers.
