A quick update as April comes to a close and the influx of warblers really ramps up. So far for the year here in Massachusetts I have had a total of 16 species of warbler including four more species first seen today-Blue winged and Prairie Warbler, Ovenbird and American Redstart.  There are several more species to go even without something odd showing up plus the overall numbers should really increase too over the next few weeks.  Bring them on!

A few more warblers have trickled in over the last few days and I ran across my first Yellow Warbler of the season.  Just a few photos of some of the species I ran across today.

An unusual Pine Warbler and update of migration so far

Among the warblers I ran across today was an odd Pine Warbler with a complete black necklace similar to what you found find on a Canada Warbler.  The bird was at Quabbin Park and I managed a few digiscoped photos of the individual.

As an update to warbler migration so far this season I will mention what has been seen so far and compare it to last year.  During March last year I had three species of warbler but had none at all this March.  So far this year, as of today, I have five species of warbler including Pine, Palm, Black and White and Yellow-rumped Warbler as well as Louisiana Waterthrush.  On the same date last year I already had seven species.  The warbler migration should pick up quite a bit over the next few weeks with dozens of species arriving.

A quick post about the warblers I recently found on a trip to Costa Rica. Although I didn't see any new species, I did find a total of 9 species including Golden winged, Mourning, Tennessee, Yellow, Chestnut sided, Buff rumped Warblers as well as American Redstart, Northern Waterthrush and Common Yellowthroat.  As typical on other trips down there the most abundant species of warbler were Tennessee and Chestnut sided Warblers.  Two of the species were new to my Costa Rica list: Mourning Warbler and Common Yellowthroat.  My current total warbler species for Costa Rica is 18.
